There were some images taken using Green Fluorescent Protein(GFP) which was discovered and developed by Osamu Shimomura et al., the Nobel laureate in chemistry in 2008. |

Mouse neural stem cells, labelled with a green fluorescent protein (GFP), were transplanted into the brain of a newborn mouse and developed into two specialised cell types (oligodendrocytes and astrocytes), essential for correct brain function. This image shows how the stem cells become specialised by responding to signals in their environment.

One-day-old zebrafish embryos with green fluorescent protein (GFP) highlighting their developing muscle cells. The large discs are the yolks that nourish the embryos as they develop. Zebrafish are widely used in the study of animal development.

One way that cells ingest material is by a process called endocytosis. Here, in this confocal micrograph, the cells which are labelled green with Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) are taking up tiny red spheres via this process.Gradually, the cell membrane extends around the sphere until it is completely enclosed. The membrane enclosing the sphere then breaks away from the edge and moves to its destination within the cell - often the lysosomes -a cell's garbage disposal unit. Credit: Alex Gray
